The front depicts  Athena, Goddess of wisdom and war and patron goddess of Athens. 
On the Reverse there is an owl, Athena's sacred bird.
Having the ability to see in the dark was symbol and a emblem  of foresight and knowledge, seeing the truth where others could not.
