FASCINUS
An Ancient Symbol of Protection
A little mischief. A powerful talisman. 2,000 years of history.
A symbol of life and protection
In ancient Rome, phallic symbolism represented fertility, vitality and abundance.
Known as the Fascinus, it was believed to ward off the evil eye, envy and protect against misfortune.
Playful and provocative, these talismanss appeared throughout Roman life, from the streets of Pompeii to the entrances of homes and shops, while tiny amulets were worn as personal talismans, even by children.
HIC HABITAT FELICITAS
" Here dwells happiness"
One of the most fascinating examples survives from Pompeii: a phallic relief above the entrance to an ancient bakery, accompanied by the inscription HIC HABITAT FELICITAS “Here dwells happiness.”
A wonderfully direct celebration of prosperity, abundance and the simple pleasures of life. A reminder that, two thousand years ago, happiness was something to be welcomed, protected and celebrated.
An ancient talisman, reimagined
Inspired by this extraordinary fragment of Roman life, KIAIA reimagines the Fascinus as a contemporary talisman carrying the spirit of an ancient belief into the present.
A little provocative, deeply symbolic and designed to be worn every day.
Because happiness never goes out of style.
